EAL Coordinator (Nursery – Year 8)

Mount Kelly Hong Kong will, as far as possible, adopt the values, ethos and learning opportunities offered to the pupils in the UK school. Mount Kelly Hong Kong will closely follow the policies and schemes of work, that Mount Kelly UK currently use. Mount Kelly Hong Kong will endeavour to offer a very similar education to its sister school, but within a Hong Kong setting.
The curriculum of our school will follow closely the English National Curriculum and school environment, using the National Curriculum as a framework but facilitated within the context of Hong Kong and our International cohort of pupils.
We’re looking to appoint staff who understand the expectations of working at an Independent UK school in an international setting. All our teachers will have a UK recognised qualification and either current UK or prior UK teaching experience. Many of our staff will be joining us directly from the UK.

In order to do this, Mount Kelly School Hong Kong will run an extended day, incorporating sport and co-curricular activities to meet these aims
• The EAL Coordinator is responsible for the assistance with and delivery of support structures, which promote pupils’ English language acquisition. The Coordinator will facilitate and organise teachers to form an EAL committee.
• The essential role of the EAL coordinator is to ensure that the Mount Kelly School Hong Kong ‘Language Policy’ and our pupil support systems are implemented with the highest possible quality. The EAL Coordinator ensures that best practices in EAL teaching, support ALL pupils and are implemented by ALL teachers and widely understood by the MKSHK community.
• EAL support and strategies are the responsibility of our teachers in all subject areas and the EAL Coordinator role is multifunctional. They are a curriculum developer, Teacher PD provider, Teacher Evaluator and Pupil advisor.
The EAL Coordinator will
• Have essential staff leadership experience
• Informed of EAL strategies, best practice and current research/readings
• Be an experienced provider of professional development in this area
• Hold a current teacher accreditation
• Have curriculum expertise in the UK National Curriculum
• Experience in evaluating/appraising teachers
• Experience and expertise as a class teacher
• Be informed of best practices in Early Childhood Education
Pupil Entrance and Induction:
• Consult school’s admissions information, induct and assess newly arrived pupils to
determine level of EAL support after entry into school.
• Identify and prioritise pupils requiring EAL support and develop short-term induction
program for newly arrived pupils and assist with placement of pupils in appropriate English
Ongoing Pupil Support
• Administer initial, ongoing, and year-end English language assessments to obtain from data on pupils’ ability and progress in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
• Provide EAL support in classes to pupils and staff (interventions, co-planning, and demo lessons)
• Ensure that all support and interventions are carried out within the classroom environment (push in) to the fullest extent possible. Report evaluations of teachers
• Develop an appropriate and aligned EAL support program for pupils for before/after school and homework support
• Develop partnerships with parents utilizing their support and strengths in support of mother tongue and create understanding about language acquisition
Teacher Support and Evaluation
• Design and produce teaching materials and suggest resource purchases to the SMT to assist with EAL programs.
• Attend planning meetings, collaborate with staff and advise all staff on the inclusive EAL programs.
• Plan collaboratively with staff, prepare and deliver lessons for individuals and small groups developing individual learning programs for EAL pupils.
• Organise and facilitate on going professional development for staff
• Support faculty in the development of Year appropriate language integration programming in mainstream classes.
• Design, implement and maintain ongoing training and development of teacher assistants as key EAL support staff.
• Provide each teacher with an EAL teaching goal for their Personal and professional development and appraisal each term.
Health and Safety
• Maintain a safe and positive teaching and learning environment. Complete relevant paperwork as directed.
• Teachers are required to take reasonable care for his/her own health and safety and abide by the School’s Health & Safety policy.
• Safeguard the well-being of the pupils in his/her charge.
• Encourage pupils to value themselves and others in the quality and nature of their learning.
• Set an example to all pupils by showing a personal attitude of co-operation, consideration and positive relationships with all members of the School.
• Meet with parents as required by the day to day educational, social and welfare needs of his/her pupils.
• Be familiar with the contents of all School Policies, especially Child Protection issues.
• Participate in the School’s Appraisal system as per the Staff Development Policy.
• Attend internal and external training courses and INSET as directed by the Senior Management Team, whenever other teaching commitments allow. Provide feedback to colleagues on courses attended.
